THE WESTCHESTER WAY - Sample One-Day Garden Tour Itinerary

(Season - May through September)

From upstate New York or Connecticut, take I-684 to Exit 6 (Route 35). Proceed West on Route 35 for four miles. Follow Park signs to entrance on left.
9:00 AM Arrive Lasdon Park and Arboretum, Somers

Begin your trip here in the northeast corner of Westchester County in the heart of the Hudson River Valley. This 243-acre property consists of woodlands, open grass meadows, formal gardens, and tree, shrub and flower specimens from all over the world. Highlights include a 30-acre arboretum featuring a formal azalea garden, a magnolia and lilac collection, a rare native American chestnut tree grove, and a dwarf conifer collection of pines, spruces, firs, and cypress. 10:30 AM Depart from Lasdon Park in Somers.

Travel East on Route 35, 4 miles to I-684 south to Exit 2 (Route 120). Proceed south on Route 120 (Purchase Street) to Anderson Hill Road. Take a left onto Anderson Hill Road and proceed east several miles. The main entrance to PepsiCo will be on your right.
11:00 PM Arrive Donald M. Kendall Sculpture Gardens, Purchase

Take a relaxing stroll (or drive) through the gardens at the world headquarters of PepsiCo. Created in the late '70's, these 168 acres of gardens of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants harmonize with 45 major contemporary sculptures from Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi, Auguste Rodin and other artists.
12:00 PM Depart Kendall Gardens.

Turn left onto Anderson Hill Road go west 5 or 6 miles to Westchester Avenue. This is a service road to I-287. Proceed west to the west-bound entrance of I-287. Take I-287 west to the merge with I-87 (NYS Thruway). Proceed northwest on I-87 (toward the Tappan Zee Bridge). Take Exit 9 (last exit before bridge) to Route 119. Take a left onto Route 119 and proceed until it ends at Route 9. At light, make a left onto Route 9 to travel south, or a right to travel north.
12:30 PM Arrive in the neighboring villages of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, part of the Historic River Towns of Westchester. Enjoy lunch at one of several group-friendly restaurants in the area (Suggestions include Pennybridge Restaurant at the Hilton Tarrytown or Horsefeathers Restaurant in Sleepy Hollow).
1:45 PM Depart for Philipsburg Manor, Route 9, Sleepy Hollow. Board shuttle buses for transport to Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate.

Take Route 9 Northbound thru the Villageof Tarrytown and then into Sleepy Hollow. Philipsburg Manor is on Route 9, on the left.

Outdoor tour of the Beaux Arts Gardens at Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate, Sleepy Hollow

Spectacular gardens befitting the home to four generations of the Rockefeller family. Organized in a series of enclosed spaces and handsome stone terraces, the gardens include the formal entrance forecourt; a hidden Italian boxwood garden; informal gardens, including the morning garden and brook garden; an expansive rose garden; the temple of Aphrodite; picturesque grottos; glorious fountains; classical sculpture; and Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller's extraordinary collection of 20th century sculpture, including works by Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Henry Moore, Louise Nevelson, and many others. The garden tour, which in not included in the standard tour of the Kykuit estate, focuses on garden history and design, landscape architecture, garden furnishings, sculpture, and, of course, the spectacular Hudson River views. 4:15 PM Shuttle bus returns you to starting point at Philipsburg Manor on Route 9 in Sleepy Hollow. Follow Route 9 south 2 miles to I-287. Depart Westchester County via I-287.
