Two–Day
Shopping Adventure in Westchester
County, NY
Shopping, the Westchester Way,
includes everything from malls to shopping centers with intriguing boutiques
and unique independent retail shops.
Several villages such as Katonah, Larchmont, Scarsdale,
Rye and Tarrytown
boast charming, walkable downtown shopping and dining districts. This itinerary begins in the City of White Plains, the jewel in Westchester’s
shopping crown.
DAY ONE
Explore and shop The Westchester, White Plains
A
superlative indoor shopping destination boasting over 150 fine stores, including
Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Tiffany’s, Crate
& Barrel, Brooks Brothers, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Williams Sonoma and
more. This 830,000 square foot fashion
mall features upscale amenities including a full-service concierge, valet
parking, marble and carpeted floors, bronze sculptures and fountain. www.simon.com
Enjoy lunch at The Westchester, where your
choices include the P.F. Chang's China Bistro or the City Limits Diner, or the Food Court on the
top level. Another option is to cross
the street to the shopping center at Fortunoff, where dining options include
The Cheesecake Factory, or the café within Whole Foods supermarket.
After lunch take some time in Fortunoff,
(“The Source”), a department store specializing in home furnishings and

Later, head over to the City Center
along Mamaroneck Avenue,
where Filene’s
Basement (www.filenesbasement.com) offers attractive discounts on
clothing for the whole family and home accessories. Other City
Center tenants include the White
Plains Performing Arts Center,
a movie multiplex, several restaurants
and Target.
Before
dinner, walk through downtown White Plains
and stop in at local shops and art galleries, including Dafco’s Art Gallery
at 193 Mamaroneck Avenue,
MJ Ellenbogen Gallery at 165
Mamaroneck Avenue, and Carroll-Condit Gallery at 210 Mamaroneck Avenue.
Select overnight accommodations from several first
class properties in White Plains, including the Crowne Plaza,
Renaissance, Summerfield Suites Hyatt or Residence Inn by Marriott and the Ritz
Carlton (opening in 2008).
DAY TWO
Travel north and explore the Village of Katonah's
downtown shopping and dining district, located west of
Exit 6 off I-684. Stroll the
quarter mile down Katonah Avenue
and its side streets that comprise the charming shopping and dining
district. Galleries such as The Eclectic Collector offer
one-of-a-kind treasures in art, furniture, jewelry, decorative accessories and
more. Clothing retailers such as Toney Toni & the Gang offer unique
finery for the whole family. The Charles Department Store, "the
store that has everything", is a local landmark that has been open since
1924.
Choose from a variety of delis, cafes and
restaurants for refreshments: the Blue Dolphin Diner, Peppino's Restaurant, or Willy
Nick’s.

Take
a turn off the beaten path and discover the Yellow Monkey Village
in Cross River at 792 Route 35 (Exit 6 off
I-684). A collection of several unique shops housed
in 18th and 19th century buildings comprise this shopping stop,
including Gallery Yellow, ETC gift shop, and Yellow Monkey Antiques, which
carries imported country furniture, home
accessories and garden ornaments.

Spend
the rest of the day in Mount Kisco, where you can enjoy
afternoon refreshment at Temptation Tea

or indulge in a spa treatment at Epidavros
Day Spa (www.epidavrosdayspa.com). There are many shopping possibilities in this
compact village on and around Route 117 (Exit 4 off I-684), including upscale chains such as Gap
and Banana Republic, and larger
retailers like TJ Maxx and Target.
Antiques shops include Golden

Other areas to shop:
Eastchester – The
Vernon Hills Shopping Center along Route 22 includes Lord & Taylor,
Ann Taylor, Brooks Brothers, Smith & Hawken, Talbots, and more.
Rye –
The downtown shopping and dining district along Purchase Street and Purdy Avenue is home to a colorful mix of
jewelry, clothing, gift and home accessory boutiques.
Tarrytown – The downtown shopping and dining
district along Route 9 (Broadway) and Main
Street features a concentration of antiques shops.
Yonkers
– The Cross County
Shopping Center is the County’s largest mall, with more than
100 stores across one million square feet of space.
