THE WESTCHESTER WAY - NORTHERN SIGHTS,  Sample Three-Day Itinerary
(Season - April through November)

Day One  
10:00 AM Arrival into Westchester County via I-684. Take Exit 6 to Route 35 East. Make a right at the first traffic light onto Route 22 south. John Jay Homestead will be on the left.
10:00–11:30AM Tour of John Jay Homestead, gardens and grounds. Route 22, Katonah.

Residence of America’s first Chief Justice and four generations of his descendents. This State Historic Site offers guided tours of the furnished Federal-style farmhouse, museum, two formal gardens and a new herb garden. 914.232.5651. www.johnjayhomestead.org

Continue south on Route 22 to the junction of Girdle Ridge Road. Veer left and follow signs to Caramoor.

12:00-3:00 PM Tour, lunch and musical recital at the Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, 149 Girdle Ridge Road, Katonah.

Caramoor is home to New York’s largest outdoor summer music festival, as well as year-round musical performances in many genres. The Mediterranean-style House Museum contains period rooms filled with fine and decorative arts from Europe and China, and the grounds feature several themed gardens. 914.232.5035. www.caramoor.org

Continue back to Route 22 North. Make a left at light onto Route 36 West, get on I-684 south to either hotel.

4:00 PM Check in at area hotel, such as the Holiday Inn Mount Kisco, or the Wellesley Inn Armonk.

Take I-684 to Exit 4, travel West on Route 172 to the end. Make a right at the light onto Route 117 / Bedford Road.

6:00 PM Dinner in Mount Kisco, followed by performance at Northern

Westchester Center for the Arts, 272 North Bedford Road, Mount Kisco.

Day Two  
  Take I-684 north to Exit 8. Make a right onto Hardscrabble Road. Outhouse Orchards is approximately 1.5 miles on the left.
11:00-11:45 AM Coffee and cider donuts at Outhouse Orchards Hardscrabble Road, North Salem.

Pick a pumpkin, or carry home a bushel of fresh apples or other in-season fruit at this family-operated farm and orchard, which is open daily. 914.277.3188.

Continue traveling east on Hardscrabble Road until the end of the road, and turn right (South) on June Road /Route 124. Stay on this road for about 1-1/4 miles to Deveau Road. Turn left and follow Deveau Road to the end, following signs to Hammond Museum.

12:00- 2:15 PM Tour and Lunch at Hammond Museum and Japanese Stroll Garden, 28 Deveau Road, North Salem.

An Asian arts museum featuring changing exhibits of contemporary visual art. Stroll through the 3.5 acre Japanese garden surrounding a picturesque pond. The café offers gourmet fare on a tree-lined terrace. 914.669.5033. www.hammondmuseum.org

Continue back to Hardscrabble Road and travel west. North Salem Vineyard will be on the left.

2:30 – 4:00 PM Tour and tastings at North Salem Vineyard, 441 Hardscrabble Road, North Salem.

Westchester’s only vineyard, producing table wines featuring characteristics of the Hudson River Region, a cool climate viticultural region influenced by maritime air and weather generated by the Atlantic Ocean.

4:30-6:30 PM Return to hotel for R&R
7:00 PM Dinner at a choice of fine restaurants set in historic mansions, such as Finch’s Tavern in Somers, Le Chateau in South Salem, Purdys Homestead in Purdys, or Inn at Pound Ridge in Pound Ridge
Day Three  
  Take I-684 to Exit 6 to Route 35 East. Continue to the traffic light at Route 121, head south and follow signs to Ward Pound Ridge Reservation.
9:00 – 10:00 AM Leisurely nature walk at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation and tour of the Trailside Nature Museum, Route 35 & 121 South, Cross River

The 4,700-acre park makes Ward Pound Ridge Reservation the county’s largest park. With its varied terrain and landscapes and miles of wooded trails, the park provides a variety of activities in all seasons. There are areas for picnicking, lean-to camping, fishing and cross-country skiing. The park is home to the Trailside Nature Museum. 914. 864.7317. www.westchestergov.com/parks

Proceed back to Route 35, head west to Route 22. Follow Route 22 to Katonah Museum of Art, on the left side of the road.

10:30-11:30 AM Tour the Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah.

Regional and nationally-recognized museum and sculpture garden featuring a series of changing exhibitions; children's learning center; family programming; lectures; tours; free jazz concerts; and sculpture garden. 914.232.9555. www.katonahmuseum.org

Head west on Route 22 to Jay Street. Take Jay Street across the train tracks and make a left onto Katonah Avenue.

12:00 PM Explore downtown Katonah's shopping and dining district along Katonah Avenue. Katonah’s Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, consists of over thirty Victorian-era buildings surrounding “The Greens”, a park-like landscape. The district contains thirty excellent examples of Queen Anne, Shingle Style and Colonial Revival homes, seven of which were moved from the site of old Katonah to the present day site.

Lunch dine-around at any restaurant in the area. (Suggestions include: Blue Dolphin Diner, Peppino’s, Willy Nick’s Café.)

2:00PM Depart Westchester County. Take Jay Street to Woods Bridge Road north to the intersection of Route 35. Make a right and travel east to I-684.
