Kilburn, designed the castle in a style like that of Norman fortifications on the Scottish border. The design somewhat resembels Castle Linsmore in Ireland. The castle was originally named "Carrolcliffe" and when completed, consisted of 45 rooms. It took over 100 craftsmen several years to complete the castle, which was built in two stages. The second stage was finished in 1910. Howard Carroll died in New York City on December 30, 1916. Members of his family occupied the castle until 1940. In 1941, Emerson and Ruth Axe bought The Castle for $45,000. During World War II, the castle tower was used as a sighting and listening post.
