The land on which Tappan Hill stands was originally part of the great Phillipse estate, sold at auction following the Revolution because of the Phillipse family’s loyalty to the British cause It remained woods and farmland until 1882 when Captain William Casey built the original frame mansion In 1902 Mark Twain bought the Casey house which he called his “farm” No doubt he was seeking peace since he had recently suffered through bankruptcy By 1915, Tarrytown had attracted many wealthy and fashionable people including Jay Gould, the railroad magnate that created Lyndhurst, and Jacques S Halle of Metropolitan banking fame Halle replaced the Casey-Twain house with the present imposing stone mansion and surrounded it with elaborate terraces and gardens Just before World War II, the mansion was purchased by David Swope, who developed Tappan Hill restaurant In the early spring of 1990, Abigail Kirsch, one of the region's preeminent caterers, officially took over the management and operation of Tappan Hill |
